The Glorious Millennium

Millions today are under a curse because they are believing a counterfeit gospel (Gal. 1:8-9). The truth about the millennium is part of this one true gospel.

There are those who say the millennium will be spent in heaven, others say we will be on earth, during which time the dead are resurrected. In the Middle Ages it was believed that the millennium was occurring because Christ, they said, was ruling in the person of the Pope and the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.

Amid all this confusion all these doctrines can’t all be right. Just what does God reveal about the millennium?

The word millennium is not in the Bible. It is two Latin words, mille, meaning thousands, and annum meaning year. So, a specific thousand-year period definitely is in the Bible.

A large portion of the Bible prophecy describing the Millennium proves it is very important to God, and the more we understand it the more important it will be to the Church.

The only scriptures in all the Bible mentioning this specific period of time is in Revelation 20:1-9. Here John sees an angel who “laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years should be fulfilled.”

If you will notice that during the millennium, the devil does not deceive the nations. So, this church age couldn’t be the millennium, because the devil is still deceiving the nations.

The millennium must be in the future, it will be a time when the devil will not be deceiving people any longer.

Now, notice what the apostle John says about the thousand years. “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years” (Rev. 20:6)

So, the millennium is also a time when the saints reign with Christ. When Jesus Christ returns to earth, we will be with Him, we will “ever be with the Lord.”

Since the saints do not rise until the second coming of Jesus Christ, and since they rule with Christ during the millennium, then the thousand years must occur after the second coming of Christ.

What happens when the last trump sounds? “And the 7th angel sounded: and there were great voices in heaven, saying, the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ; and he shall reign forever and ever” (Rev. 11:15-19).

The word Millennium usually the M is capitalized and it refers to the future thousand-years on this earth with Jesus Christ commencing with His second coming.

In a short, but powerful sermon the apostle Peter, referred to the time after Christ’s return:

“But those things, which God before had showed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. And he shall send Jesus Christ which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the time of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began” (Acts 3:18-21).

Every since Satan appeared in the Garden of Eden as the wily serpent or whispering enchanter and enticed Adam and Eve to sin, he has been corrupting everything.

So, Paul tells us: “That the whole creation groans and travails (or suffering birth pains) together until now” (Rom. 8:22).

One of the most important things Bible prophecy reveals about the Millennium is that during this time, there will be a massive restoration project to bring the world back to an Eden-like condition. Instead of paradise lost, it will become paradise restored.

It will end up being far better than all the secular ideas of utopia that man has dreamed up.

Notice: “For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving and the voice of melody. (Isa. 51:3).

God goes on to say: “Thus said the Lord God; in the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be builded.

“And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by. And they shall say, this land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced (or fortified) and are inhabited.

“Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the Lord build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the Lord have spoken it, and I will do it” (Ezk. 36: 33-36). Can you picture this breathtaking scene?

In the Book of Revelation, it describes how Christ will return: “And I saw heaven opened and behold a white horse: and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True and in righteousness he does judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture (or robe) dipped in blood: and his name is called the Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

“And out of his mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations and he shall rule them with a rod of iron; and he treads the wine press. Fierceness and wrath of Almighty God and he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written King of kings and Lord of lords” (Rev. 19:11-16).

Jesus Christ is coming back to establish His reign on the earth; (Rev. 19:17-21) shows how he will crush the mighty armies that oppose Him.

When the Messiah appeared on the earth the first time, most people did not recognize who He was. Simply because they were expecting a conquering king who would deliver them from Roman rule.

Today, it is just the opposite. People are now used to the images of a suffering Savior and are not really expecting Him to return and reign over the world.

But Jesus Christ absolutely promised that He will return, as a conquering King to rule the world. (Send for our FREE DVD, “Yes, He Will Come Again.”)

In the Book of Revelation chapter 20 shows what will happen next: “And I saw an angel come down from heaven having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil and Satan and bound him a thousand years” (verse 1).

Jesus Christ is going to banish the forces of evil Satan and his demons, the primary instigators behind the world’s wickedness. But why is this such an urgent priority? The apostle John gives us the answer: “The whole world lies in wickedness” (I John 5:19).

It is Satan who, ever since the time of Adam and Eve, powerfully deceives the whole world (Rev. 12:9). This world is being held captive, and soon, to be set free. The all-pervasive, unseen influence of Satan is the number one reason why human nature is so bad.

The minds of all humans are like a computer that has been infected with a destructive virus. After the source of the virus has been removed, our minds can be cleansed from the lingering effects and reprogrammed with godly education and God’s Holy Spirit.

What happens next? John sees in vision God’s faithful servants who have been martyred but now are alive again:

“And I saw thrones and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years” (Rev. 20:4).

“Neither can they die any more for they are equal unto the angels and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection” (Luke 20:36).

When Revelation 20:5 says “this is the first resurrection” it is referring back to verse 4. The word first implies that there will be more than one resurrection. Verse 5 tells of the second resurrection this resurrection will take place after the Millennium. These people will have their first chance for salvation.

Verse 6 gives us some crucial information: “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power; but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years.”

The book of Hebrew 11:35 refers to the first resurrection as the better resurrection why?

Because those in it are raised to glorified eternal life the second resurrection is to mortal physical life. Jesus Christ and those given eternal life at His return will rule over all remaining human beings on earth who survive the devastating end-time wars and plagues.

We will also rule over angels, and generations of human beings to follow.

Notice what Ezekiel wrote in regarding the Millennium: “I will multiply men upon you, all the houses of Israel, all of it; and the cities shall be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt. I will multiply upon you man and beast, and they shall increase and bear young. Lots of tamed animals to enjoy.

When we think of the Millennium we need to think about the perspective of the human beings alive at that time and the glorified saints of God. You see the millennial prophecies are describing idea conditions for physical human beings, including earthly pleasures that sound extremely appealing.

For the glorified saints, members of God’s Family, it will be greater and better than living as a human being. Right now, it is difficult for us to imagine what it will be like to be a spirit being, but we should have faith in God that He has something much, much better in store for us.

I John 3:2 says: “Beloved, now are we the son of God, and it does not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is.”

Of course, the human beings in the Millennium will eventually have their opportunity for eternal life.

Daniel 7:18 says: “the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.”

Rev. 1: 5-6 in John’s vision reveals that Christ is making us kings and priests to His God and Father.

This is why Christ is called King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The resurrected saints will be the lords and kings who serve under Christ. There are prophecies dealing with the Millennium that deals with the teaching roles of spirit leaders:

“Your teachers will be hidden no more: with your own eyes you will see them. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, this is the way, walk in it” (Isa. 30:20-21).

Whoever these teachers will be, they will teach the people, warn them and remind them which way to go.

During the first part of the Millennium Christ will give special attention to making modern Israel, now that they are back together again, making Israel His model nation. The will learn that God’s way is the best way to live:

“God will give them a new heart and put His Spirit in them” (Ezk. 36:24-28). King David will be resurrected and be the king over all this reunited Israel Ezk. 37:24-25; Ezk. 34:23-24.

The apostles will be king over each tribe of Israel Matt. 19:28. Jerusalem will be the capital of the world, and the Holy Land will live up to its name and be a holy land.

“Thus, says the Lord: I will return to Zion, and dwell in the midst of Jerusalem Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth, the Mountain of the Lord of host, the Holy Mountain” (Zech. 8:3-5).

People will flow into Jerusalem to learn the way of the Lord (Isa. 2:2-3). Isaiah refers to Christ as the Prince of Peace and of the increase of His government there will be no end (Isa. 9:6-7).

Isaiah is known as the messianic prophet because his book is full of prophecies of the Messiah and the Millennium. His own name means “The Lord saves.”

Isaiah 11:9 says they will not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain- why is that? Because they will be unlearning their false ideas and learning the knowledge of God.

John writes: If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32).

Once people understand and are living by God’s laws which James calls the Law of Liberty, they will enjoy the greatest freedom of all, that becoming a spirit being.
